When I decided to accept that my book wasn't going to ever be looked at by an agent, let alone published by one of the big six, I began looking at ways to get more exposure for my book and perhaps more feedback as well. Enter wattpad, a free platform for writers and an ocean of books for readers. The most popular books have millions of views and likes, and a lot of writers on wattpad develop a strong following of readers.
However, wattpad isn't for everyone. Not for every writer and definitely not for every reader. My mistake was not in using wattpad, though, my mistake was in thinking I could ever be truly successful there. I did expose my book to a small audience and got a lot of amazing feedback, but the story never took off.
Because wattpad isn't for stories like mine or writers like me. Wattpad is mostly for teen readers and writers looking for a formula driven romance. There are all kinds of genres, of course, and some of the books I attempted to read were well-written, but the majority were not. I think its wonderful that there is a place for young writers to hone their craft, don't get me wrong, but stories on wattpad aren't usually popular because they are well-written. They are popular because they fit precisely what wattpad readers want. Which is respectable.
My series is definitely marketable, but its an investment and it requires some thinking while reading it. There is a lot of world building at times, plenty of perplexing moments, and a good bit of fast paced dialogue that young or simple readers will have trouble keeping up with.
And that's okay.
Not everyone likes to read the same thing. I received nothing but positive feedback from my targeted audience. Aside from a plethora of grammatical errors, it was rare that I received any kind of feedback that would cause me to doubt my story or my writing skills. That told me that I was just on the wrong platform and that I needed to find a way to get my story to the people who would really enjoy it. I needed to publish it, get some loyal readers, and use their word of mouth to draw in more readers.
My story is still on wattpad as of now, but it will be pulled soon. I will be publishing Passage in early spring of 2018 and don't want the free, un-professionally edited version out there. So, if you feel inclined to read it all and are fine with rampant errors, go ahead and try to find it.
I'm not linking it.
